Do You Swap?

During my first pregnancy, I went to one Mom2Mom sale. I was shocked at the number of moms that were selling items. It all seemed a little chaotic to me.  Women and children everywhere.  Though, I didn’t leave with much, I realized that one day I would be the one to sell used clothing, toys, etc. Well, the day has come. Knowing I am done having children and therefore done being pregnant, I started rummaging through my closet to clean out my gently used maternity clothing.  I also cleaned out all the newborn clothes that would no longer be worn by my growing baby.

Remembering that Mom2Mom sale, knowing I don’t have much (OK, no) free time, I thought about packing all my used clothing up to donate.  But, then, I felt like some of it was worth too much to donate to the Salvation Army to let them make a profit from it.  So, I thought maybe I would take it to my local consignment shop.  But they have some tight stipulations:

“You may drop off merchandise to be consigned on Tuesday (Last names A-L) or Thursday (M-Z) during regular business hours.  Plan to pick up your ‘no-thank-yous’ and paperwork within 3 business days.  Items left beyond 5 business days become property our property.  We are picky, picky, picky!  Items must be in perfect condition, freshly laundered, spotless, in working condition,” yadda, yadda, yadda.  OK, too much for me to deal with.

So… what’s a girl to do?  Referring to my friend, Google, I searched ‘online consignments’ to see if maybe I could find an easier way.  And yes, I found one.  Swap.com.  Swap makes the whole process of eliminating easy for busy moms.  Here is how it works:

  1.  Sign up on www.swap.com
  2. Request a box for shipment.  You can pick among different sizes.  The box gets shipped to your home via UPS.  Shipping one or more items to Swap.com is subject to the flat fee of $8.90 or $11.90 with shipping material.  Items can be dropped off at any UPS service location or handed to a UPS driver.  The Inbound Service Fee is automatically deducted from your sales proceeds.
  3. Pack your items in a box and drop off at UPS.swap
  4. Swap will notify you once they receive your items.  They will also notify you once your items are available for review and pricing.  So friggin’ simple.

Swap takes gently used women clothing including maternity, kids’, toys, games, etc.  If your items get rejected — you can request they get shipped back to you OR swap will donate them for you.  They also have a SureSell Guarantee which means they guarantee that you will make money on your items, even if they are not selling!  If an accepted item has not sold in 45 days, you can sell it to them.  They will pay you a guaranteed price of up to 30% of the item’s average new retail value, depending on the item category and the condition rating of the listed item.

According to their website, the average seller makes about $150.

Of course, you have other options.  You don’t have to sell.  You can swap an item for another item, and of course buy anything of interest to you.  You must have a PayPal account in order to receive money from Swap on items sold, and can make purchases through PayPal or by credit card.

Not only will I be a seller, I will also be a buyer.  Some of the deals are just too good to pass up.

So, are you ready to Swap? 🙂
